Robert Diel was born in Amsterdam in 1952, and is a self trained photographer with extensive experience in portrait photography, artist’s publicity shots and editorial model’s portfolio shots.
In 1974 he moved to London to study dramatic arts. In his spare time he asked friends to sit in front of his camera. While taking acting classes at RADA, fellow students asked him to do headshots to send to agents and casting agents.
Soon he was asked by managements to photograph other actors as well, who were already out of drama school, and working professionally. Shortly after, he received his Press Card and was included into The Spotlight Contacts directory.
In 1982 Gil Barber, the model agent and actor, invited Robert to start doing testing for editorial models, and help models to build up their portfolios and get shots for their composite cards.
In 1982 Vidal Sassoon noticed Robert’s work and he was engaged to shoot the 1983 collection. This got him a cover on the March 1983 issue of “Hair and Beauty”, and further published work followed in UK and USA. He regularly published in “Hairdressers Journal”.
Soon he also started taking pictures for EMI Music Publishing, shooting covers for music books. He was selected to shoot jewellery for Salvador Dali, and also published in RITZ Newspaper.
One of Robert’s portraits of Hubertus Prinz zu Löwenstein was featured on the cover of the Prince’s autobiography “Abenteurer der Freiheit” (“Toward the Further Shore”), published by Taschenbuch Verlag Ullstein, in their Lebensbilder series, in June 1983. Robert also had work featured in “Lady Colin Campbell’s Guide to Being a Modern Lady”, published in 1986.
At that time he also commenced to have pictures published with Athena International, the British art franchise stores, and posters and blank postcards with his images were sold worldwide.
In the early 1990s Robert was invited to work in Milan, and he moved there. He continued to work with editorial models for model managements, and also had collaborations with both Armani and Versace, doing display and press release material for their shops and fashion shows.
In 1994 Robert took a sabbatical from photography and returned to live in The Netherlands. He did not take up photography again until 2013. He now specializes in street, landscape and nature photography, doing portraiture and fashion pictures by special arrangement.
